The “Home Alone” Curse is all too real. The big-budget movie is in peril, and only one actor can save it. Not Macaulay Culkin. Not Joe Pesci. It’s the goofball cop, Larry Hankin, with one iconic glazed donut.

bitchy | Macaulay Culkin: Joe Pesci bit me and left a scar during Home Alone
A few weeks ago, Snap Judgement/NPR’s Spooked podcast did an episode dedicated to the “Home Alone Curse.” The story was told by actor Larry Hankin, who plays Larry the officer in the first movie. He’s the one eating a glazed donut as Kate McCallister is pleading with him over the phone to send someone to check on Kevin. Apparently, Larry was very close to stepping in to take over for Daniel Stern…

So I came up with another “never gonna write it, but” crossover idea for PP/Grey’s while doing my combined rewatch- if Izzie were to go with Bailey out to LA after she messes up her patient’s medication in S6, and then her working at Pacific Wellcare under Addison to continue her surgical residency (this is where I’d have to do research if I actually wrote it)... and then I remembered Cristina’s stepdad Saul Rubenstein the plastic oral surgeon. And if I were to do this I would incorporate him, which meant fancasting the role- I was looking for young 80′s (now) Jewish actors to match Tsai Chin (now 86) who plays Helen.
Tumblr media
So some of my picks...
Tumblr media
Ron Rifkin who was working with ABC a lot at this time
Tumblr media
Judd Hirsch
Tumblr media
Elliott Gould who worked with KH on Doubt not too long after would also be feasible but I don’t get the same joy imagining him interacting with Sandra as Cristina
Tumblr media
I’m really partial to Dan Hedaya because of Clueless
and then two more out-there picks are: Larry Hankin (but there’s not a lot of gifs of content from him around the time to help me imagine it) or Paul Michael Glaser

BOTTOMS UP
April 13, 1934
Tumblr media
Directed by David Butler
Produced by Buddy G. DeSylva for 20th Century-Fox
Written by David Butler, Buddy G. DeSylva, and Sid Silvers
Choreography by Harold Hecht
Synopsis ~ Spencer Tracy stars as fast-buck promoter Smoothie King. Our hero's latest scam is to pass off Hollywood extra Wanda Gale (Pat Patterson) and forger Limey Brook (Herbert Mundin) as British nobility, getting both of them prestigious jobs at a movie studio. Eventually Wanda becomes a big star, falling out of love with Smoothie along the way in favor of her leading man Hal Reed (John Boles). But Smoothie takes it all in stride; after all, there's still a world full of chumps and suckers, ripe for fleecing.
CAST
Tumblr media
Spencer Tracy (’Smoothie’ King) won two Oscars and was nominated seven other times in his long career. This is his only musical.  He also appeared with Lucille Ball in Without Love (1945).
John Boles (Hal Reed) also did Thousands Cheer (1943) with Lucille Ball).
Pat Paterson (Wanda Gale) was married to Charles Boyer. This is her only film with Lucille Ball.
Herbert Mundin (Limey Brook) was an English-born actor making his only film with Lucille Ball.
Sid Silvers (Spud Mosco) was also the co-writer of this film. This is his only movie with Lucille Ball.
Harry Green (Louis Baer) makes his only film with Lucille Ball.
Thelma Todd (Judith Marlowe)  was known as ‘The Ice Cream Blonde' and ‘Hot Toddy'. This is her only film with Lucille Ball.

Dell Henderson (Lane Worthing) went on to do five more films with Lucille Ball.
Suzanne Kaaren (Secretary) makes her only screen appearance with Lucy.
Douglas Wood (Baldwin) also appeared with Lucille Ball in Her Husband’s Affairs (1947).
UNCREDITED CAST
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball* (Chorine) makes her eighth film since coming to Hollywood in 1933.
Tumblr media
Barbara Pepper* (Chorine) made six films with Lucille Ball, including her Lucy’s first, Roman Scandals (1933). The two became friends, and she was one of the first people Lucille Ball wanted for the role of Ethel Mertz after Bea Benadaret passed. Pepper’s drinking made her a risk for the network and sponsor, but she went on to make ten appearances on “I Love Lucy”.
Chorines: Lee Auburn, Bonnie Bannon*, Lynn Bari, Dolores Casey*, Irene Coleman, Ann Darcy, Jean Gale*, June Gale, Sugar Geise, Betty Gordon, Jane Hamilton, Vivian Keefer*, Laura La Marr, Mary Lange*, Shirley Lloyd, Dona Massin, Ruth Moody, Vera Payton, Virginia Ray, Beverly Royde, Katharine Snell, Alice Stombs, Valerie Traxler

Minor Roles: Peggy Beck, Georgia Clarke, Elizabeth Cooke, Patricia Dobbs, Dee Dowell, Jean Fursa, Kathryn Hankin, Betty Neitman, Ellen Thomas, Mildred Unger

“Is I in Love? I Is” J. Russel Robinson
Opera Singer: I've always considered myself a virtuoso. 'Smoothie' King: I didn't ask about your morals.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball was paid $75 dollars a week when she was loaned out to Fox by RKO to make this film. She appears in the song “Waitin’ at the Gate for Katy.”
Tumblr media
The film received a favorable review from The New York Times critic Mordaunt Hall, who called it "a neat, carefree piece of work, which is helped greatly by Spencer Tracy, Pat Paterson, an English actress who here makes her American picture bow; Herbert Mundin, Harry Green, and, to a lesser extent, by John Boles" and noted that it "has its full share of honest humor and also several tuneful songs." Nonetheless, it was a box office disappointment for Fox.

It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
Tumblr media
On today's episode I talk to comedian and actor Larry Hankin. Originally from Long Island, Larry got his start doing stand-up in Greenwich Village as a contemporary of Lenny Bruce and Woody Allen. After moving to Chicago and joining Second City, he and a number of other improvisers formed The Committee in San Francisco. Larry is one of the most well-known character actors in Hollywood, and trying to list his numerous credits is nigh impossible, but a few of the more well-known ones are Escape from Alcatraz, Friends, Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, Barry, Billy Madison, Star Trek: Voyager, Laverne & Shirley and over a hundred other roles. In addition, The Loopholes Dossier, a number of writings based on characters he created on stage, was released late last year by BookBaby!

How To Watch The 'Friends' Reunion In The UK
Tumblr media
The upcoming Friends reunion is arguably the biggest TV news this side of 2020. With all the original cast getting together after two decades – plus heaps of celebrity guests – this is one show you definitely don’t want to miss. Friends: The Reunion (The One Where They Get Back Together) is set to air in the U.S. on May 27, but undoubtedly Friends fans on this side of the Atlantic are desperate to know how to watch the Friends reunion in the UK.
Announced today, Deadline has revealed that Sky is the frontrunner in securing the UK rights for Friends: The Reunion. The deal is not yet confirmed, says Deadlines’ sources, but Sky has been considered “most likely destination for the special” due to its close ties with WarnerMedia.
While Sky has historically had exclusive rights to HBO originals (think Game Of Thrones, Watchmen etc.), the HBO Max Friends reunion could still be snapped up by another big broadcaster. It is the hottest thing on the TV market right now, after all. Sky has yet to comment and you’ll just have to watch this space.
Meanwhile, Bustle has been keeping a close eye on the Friends: The Reunion updates (could we be any more eager?).
HBO Max first confirmed in early 2020 that Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer would be reuniting for the unscripted special. The show’s creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane are on board to host the special, which was originally set to be filmed and aired during the spring of 2020 before COVID interrupted, well, everything.
Ahead of its debut, Courteney Cox spilled some details about the “unbelievable” reunion to Ellen Degeneres. “It was so emotional. It’s an unscripted reunion, but we got to be on Stage 24 for the first time, all of us in, like, I forgot how many years. 15 years? 17 years?” she said.
Cox also confirmed that there were lots of “special surprises” during filming too but kept schtum about other details.
As Bustle detailed earlier this year, in addition to the core six Friends friends, the reunion special will feature a slew of famous faces, including supporting actors from the show’s 10-season tenure: Maggie Wheeler (Janice), James Michael Tyler (Gunther) Elliot Gould (Jack Geller), Christina Pickles (Judy Geller), Tom Selleck (Richard Burke), Reese Witherspoon (Rachel’s sister Jill), Larry Hankin (Mr. Heckles), and Thomas Lennon (Randall, aka Joey’s hand twin).
Also joining will be plenty of other celebrities who are, presumably, Friends fans: David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Kit Harington, Mindy Kaling, and Malala Yousafzai. It’ll be a packed house — and it all takes place at Warner Bros’ Stage 24 in Burbank, where the show was originally filmed.

Five Memorable Characters of Larry Hankin
Five Memorable Characters of Larry Hankin
I really enjoyed writing the feature last month about the “Five Memorable Roles” of character actor Ernie Sabella. If you read my tribute to Mr. Sabella’s career, you’d have read that I really enjoy watching the work of character actors over that of a megastar leading actors or actresses. There are many character actors whose work I enjoy, so I decided to write another tribute to one of, if not…
